CGHA Impact Interview:

MHI’s Involvement in Australia’s Decarbonization and Beyond

In this Impact Interview, we had the privilege of speaking with Mr. Hitoshi Kaguchi, the Senior Executive Vice President and President & CEO of GX Solutions at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI). With a distinguished career in the energy sector, Mr. Kaguchi shared valuable insights into MHI’s strategies and advancements in hydrogen and ammonia technologies, particularly in the context of Australia’s energy transition.

Executive Summary:

MHI’s Involvement in Australia’s Decarbonization:

MHI is actively involved in Australia’s decarbonization efforts by enhancing the hydrogen ecosystem. Mr. Kaguchi highlighted that MHI’s focus includes:

  • Hydrogen Production: Providing advanced hydrogen production systems.

  • Hydrogen Transport: Converting hydrogen into ammonia for efficient transport and storage.

  • Ammonia Production and Transportation: Collaborating on the production and transport of ammonia, which is crucial for a green hydrogen economy.

MHI is partnering with entities such as the Port of Newcastle, Orica, and Origin Energy to accelerate green ammonia production. The goal is to scale up production and explore export opportunities to Japan and South Korea.

Addressing Challenges and Opportunities:

Mr. Kaguchi acknowledged that green hydrogen and ammonia face challenges, primarily related to high costs driven by electricity prices. To address these issues, MHI is recommending the use of blue hydrogen, which is produced from natural gas with CO2 captured and stored. This approach could help bridge the gap while scaling up green hydrogen production. MHI’s strategy involves integrating both blue and green hydrogen to facilitate the transition to a hydrogen society.

Future Pathways and MHI’s Role:

The collaboration between Japan and Australia in clean hydrogen and ammonia is crucial for future energy markets. Mr. Kaguchi emphasized that MHI aims to leverage its strong partnership with Australian and Japanese companies to drive these projects forward. He envisions MHI playing a key role in building robust partnerships and enhancing the hydrogen and ammonia supply chain between the two countries.
